UK & Australia - Translating the Differences

Apart from the wonderful weather, glorious beaches and friendly people there are few key differences to working in Australia compared to working in the UK.

  1. On commencing work in Australia you will need to apply for a Tax File Number from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) which has a similar purpose to your NIS number in the UK.
  2. Similar to paying a levy for the NHS in the UK, you will pay a healthcare levy called Medicare in Australia, which automatically comes out of your pay packet.
  3. UK employers offer a Pension contribution. Australian employers are required by law to contribute an amount equivalent to 9% of your annual salary, to a Superannuation Fund of your choice. We advise when applying for jobs in Australia that you ask whether the salary package advertised includes or excludes superannuation.
  4. Income tax works in a similar way to the UK and you can determine the different income tax brackets by contacting the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). However, unlike the UK, each year it is an individual's responsibility to lodge a personal tax return and this is not something that is done automatically by the ATO for you. More information can be gathered from their website. The Australian financial year runs from the 1st July to the 30th June.
